Hello.

It is mid-June of 2021, so that means it is time for a list of the best video games from the year prior. I played 21 video games which were released in 2020, which means a game would have to do nothing beyond being played by me to have achieved a spot on this list. That is not impressive at all. Here is a list of games I played from the year 2020, but in alphabetical order:

13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim
Astro’s Playroom
Black Mesa
Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon 2
Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time
Cyberpunk 2077
Demon’s Souls (2020)
Doom 64: The Lost…

The first time I launched my ship in Outer Wilds was a unique experience.I lifted off from my backwater in my tiny spaceship patched together with wood and glass, quickly leaving the atmosphere and emerging into the vast sea of black which is outer space. A pleasant melody fills my ears as I peer towards each distant rock and select my destination. I spotted a large one with a green hue which appeared to be covered in dense clouds and decided to make this planet my first destination. The thrusters on my patchwork vessel began a muffled roar with the…

Of all the major creative mediums we indulge in regularly of this era, video games have seen the most rapid growth. In the mere two and a half decades I’ve lived, the landscape of this art form has changed from the clumsy beginnings of 3D gaming to one which has been quickly refined to show jaw-dropping visuals, massive amounts of content, and tight mechanical precision, all of which were simply an impossibility under the technological restraints of the mid-1990s. …

To say From Software has a reputation for creating difficult video games would be a drastic understatement. In fact, their approach to game design, dating back to 2009’s Demon’s Souls, has almost singlehandedly reinvigorated the medium’s love for and awareness of challenge. Obviously, these games didn’t invent the concept of difficulty, nor was there any lack of difficulty in the medium to begin with, but it was these games that made difficulty the new hit thing. …

I discovered Tetris recently. That isn’t to say I had never played the game until a mere few months ago, but I only just began to dig deeply into the true intricacy of the game. The concept is simple: The player is randomly given a set of four blocks condensed into a single mass in some pattern which they must build into a wall. If you fill out an entire line horizontally that line is then cleared, allowing you to continue building. However, if you consistently fail to fill out these horizontal lines, the wall will eventually fill up the…

The Kingdom Hearts franchise is among the most polarizing to grace the medium. With it’s obfuscating story line, odd integration of Disney worlds and characters, and a gloriously cheesy focus on the dichotomy of light and dark, the series has become almost infamous in it’s genuinely naive nature among the common public. Many have tirelessly examined the inner workings of this franchise, only to conclude that it was obviously written as it progressed, and Tetsuya Nomura’s efforts to tie everything in a neat little package were, unfortunately, misappropriated. …

The past few weeks of my life have been strange to say the least. The first oddity came from a school function landing me within the mountains of Jamaica, spending the next week learning much about myself and about how I feel for my fellow people in this world. The very next day after my return, I began to question the existence of hatred spanning across each individual human community. This is, obviously, not the most discernible problem, and as much as I’d like to pretend I found some form of answer to this equation, I really only scraped a…

I play a lot of video games. When reminiscing of the past, all the way back to when I was a small child and 3D gaming technology was just beginning to crack into the market, I cannot personally recall a memory in which I was not in some way acclimated to the concept of gaming. My brother owned a cheap top loader NES model, where I toiled hours away to the worlds of Mega Man and The Legend of Zelda. …
